Hi everyone

I ve been working on a contact problem in which there are 2 concentric cylinders . the cylinders are not in contact initially but the inner cylinder expands and comes in contact with the outer cylinder. comsol solves the problem but there is penetration. I dont know whats wrong . I would really appreciate any comments.
Thank you,
Manohar

Did you set your contact pairs?

Hi Manohar,

I have been working on a similar problem like yours, which I have 2 objects that will expand due to temperature changes. previously someone has provided me with the following link of an example in contact problems, you may start with this one to gain more understanding.

Frankly, I still have errors in my problem and keep on trying; so maybe we can keep each other posted if any of us makes some discoveries.

Yeah I am quite sure my contact definition is set right . I still don't know whats wrong.

Although Comsol is a fantastic software for multiphysics, it does not handle contact problems properly, and I moved over to Abaqus for contact problems.

Hi,

COMSOL is continuously improving its contact algorithms and they have gone through many revisions since these original postings in 2009. The latest version, 4.4, has additional contact methods. See www.comsol.com/release/4.4#structural for more information. We have no reports of problems with uncontrolled penetration with mechanical contact. Contact simulations can sometimes be challenging and we recommend that you contact technical support for help with specific models.

See also the Knowledgebase articles www.comsol.com/support/knowledgebase/1102/ and www.comsol.com/support/knowledgebase/1171/ .
