boundary distance variable

I have two questions.
1. How can I get the nearest distance between a point (or a finite element) and a bounday (e.g., a zigzag curve). It seems the "Boundary Distance Variables" (in the 3.5 version) can achieve this goal. Where can I find it in the version 4.2?
2. I want to set a reaction kinetics in a finite element (cell) based on the value of certain variables in the nearest neighboring elements (cells). Is there any convenient way to realize it?
Your answer will be greatly appreciated.
