Thermal Stress in a Rotor due to Bearing Heat Loss

Application ID: 90251

Hydrodynamic bearings generate heat due to the viscous losses in the lubricant. As a result, the temperature of the rotor increases causing deformation and thermal stresses in both the rotor and the bearing housing.

This example shows how to model different physical phenomena that are involved in the heat transfer in a rotor bearing system and how they affect each other.

The results include pressure distribution and viscous heat loss in the bearing; temperature profile in the lubricant film, rotor, and bearing housing; and stress and deformation in the rotor and the bearing housing.
