stiff spring velocity concept

In one of the library models for Convection and diffusion, Diffusion models. At the fluid interface the stiff spring velocity is used as part of equation for flux. it is used to overcome the discontinutiy in concentration profile at the interphase.

I am not able to understand the physics behind it . It is a numerical thing. But it changes the equation that is to be used in model.

any help is appreciated
