Piezoelectric Circuit Interface

Hi! Apologies for any silly mistakes, this is my first real Comsol project.

I'm trying to make a simulation of an ultrasound transducer placed in a water bath. Another transducer sends a pressure wave to the first, which absorbs and reflects the pressure. I should be able to change its reflectivity by the resistance across its terminals, but for some reason this is not working. I think I have likely set up my circuit incorrectly.

Essentially, my question is whether the resistor R2 in my simulation is actually across the terminals of the water bath transducer? And whether the rest of the simulation is set up to do what i described above? I want to be able to change the resistance and see the resulting change in reflectivity.

Thanks!

Hi Brian,

In your model, it looks like Terminal 2 is not connected anywhere to the electric circuit. The connection to Terminal 3 with resistor R2 looks fine. One way to check is to run the simulation for ~10 periods and probe the voltage on terminal 3 (es.V0_3). It does indeed change as the value of R2 changes. At least I saw a difference in terminal 3 voltage vs. time if R2 was set to 1 ohm as you have it set or if R2 is changed to something like 1000 ohm.

The reflected acoustic pressure signal is a function of the size and shape of the piezo, material properties, boundary conditions, as well as the configuration of the circuit. You could probe the pressure vs. time at a point on the receive transducer (like point 3) and compare with different trials of R2 values to see the effect of changing resistance on the acoustic pressure.
