Excitation of a dielectric waveguide in wave optics module.

Hello. I wanted to ask about excitation of a waveguide using numeric port in wave optics module. I have seen that while exciting, the core and cladding need to be selected as port boundaries. Why is that ? Does exciting only the core not result in guided wave ? How does COMSOL decide which is the core and which is the cladding and hence guide the wave properly?

(I have attached an image describing the situation)

Thanks and Regards Gulzar
