How to mesh thin wires imported from STL files

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

I am trying to import and mesh thin wires (20-30um in diameter) from STL files, but came across the following issues:

1) I can import the STL files, but when messhing, it could have "Self intersections not supported" error.

2) Fractions of the wire would be missing, and create issue when messhing.

3) Is Tetrahetral mesh a good option?

A wire next to it, imported from STL same way could have no issue. (see attached image)

Could you provide some insight into it?

Thanks, Stacey

Hello Yemin,

Regarding your first two questions: have you tried 5.5? STL import has improved quite a bit since 5.3a.

Regarding your third question: Sure, centain geometries can be meshed using swept meshes starting from a quad mesh on one of the surfaces. See the documentation (Reference Manual, version 5.5, page 620and following and the example starting on page 608 for an example showing how to deal with an imprint on a linking face) for when this technique is applicable.

Best,

Jeff
