Extrude along a predifined line

Hi, I'm making a 3D toroidal, which looks like a ring-transformer. I have managed to draw a toroidal helical coil in 3D, based on a parametric curve. However, I would like to make an extrude along the line, to simulate the wire around for example an iron core. How can I do this?
I have tried to make a work plane, but not to get it to be perpendicular to the line, and when I use the sweep function, the "wire" has an eliptical form.
