Vertical Compression of a 3D Part

I need to model a decelerating compression on a cylinder. The compressive force is acting solely on the top surface of the part and and starts compressing at a defined impact velocity and then decelerates to velocity of zero at some point down the part (dictated by initial velocity and deceleration magnitude).
I cannot achieve the desired result using prescribed acceleration as it cannot act as a deceleration. Modelling an upwards initial velocity to have the effect of turning the downwards acceleration into a deceleration doesn't work as it stretches the part rather than squashes it. Is there another way to achieve the effect of a decelerating compression?
