Please Help! COMSOL Automatic Shutdown

For some reason, COMSOL 5.1 automatically shuts down before it finishes computing. I was told a separate window for progress should open up, but it does not. When I look at the progress at the bottom right of the COMSOL window, I notice that he program was just about to run PARADISO before it automatically shuts down. I just recently installed this program on my laptop. (My computer runs on Windows 10, but for some reason, according to the error log below, it says Windows 8).

Could someone please explain to me what the problem is? I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Java version and it still does not work. Please help.

I am just going to guess at the problem.

First, I do know that it is not necessary to be concerned about installing a different version of Java. COMSOL comes with Java installed within itself, and it is set up to use that version of Java by default. The Java error messages you see are generated by COMSOL package as a whole, and help to determine the cause of the error you are getting. So, unless you override the default Java with a command line switch and tell COMSOL to use an external version of Java you have installed, you are wasting your time to install another version of Java.

Usually, you can find the cause of the error right at the very beginning of your Java dump. Your Java dumps says early on "EXCEPTION_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION (0xc000001d) at pc=0x00007ffa33c6b462, pid=8016, tid=6540". This strange message doesn't really tell you much, so I am going to guess that you have exceeded your memory limit of the machine.

I base this guess by the fact that you are using a Direct solver, PARDISO, which uses the most memory of all solvers in the package. So, let's proceed to try to figure out the problem.

1. Try to reduce the problem size to a bare minimum by using the coarsest mesh you can create for the problem. Replace your existing mesh with the coarsest mesh you can devise.

2. Resolve, and see if the problem persists.

3. If it does persist, try to replace the direct solver of all the variables, with a segregated solver of groups of variables. Note: you have not mentioned what you are solving.

4. If that persists, try to replace the direct solver with iterative solvers which use much less memory.

You see the pattern ?

search for segregated solver in the manuals. it is certainly there.

Also, perhaps if you provide your model, it will be quicker to see what is wrong with it

But since you did send your actual computer specs, I can tell you that part of the problem may be that you are solving a problem that is too large for the memory on your computer. an 8GB ram machine is very small for COMSOL to use; particularly for direct solver problems.

I could offer to solve your problem on my computer, and tell you how much memory it is using to solve.

Can't find the model number for now, but the version number is 5.1.0.234 and the license number is 1013421.

I think the problem is slowly being fixed. After adding "Segregated", the program does not shut down after computing. But the following message shows up:

Failed to find a solution.
In Segregated Step:
Divergence of the linear iterations.
Returned solution is not converged.

Is something wrong with the "Segregated Step" settings? How can I fix this?

Your model runs fine on my machines. This is a linux shop, and I ran your model as is with v5.1 and v5.2. In a separate case, I removed your solver settings and started over with default solver settings. I also ran on a Windows-10 VM that I have v5.2 installed. All ran fine. I do not have a native Windows-10 v5.1, but I do not see any problems so there is no reason why your model should not run since Windows-10 is supported by COMSOL v5.1. Therefore, I suspect an install problem. Your model is set up with "extremely coarse" mesh, so I also tried "extremely fine" mesh and both ran fine. Here are some statistics:

X-coarse, 2828+151 dof, 899 MB ram, 9902 MB vram
X-fine, 317796+2576 dof, 2.73 GB ram, 11.76 GB vram

I am attaching files with the various changes I tried. I cannot attach the X-fine model since it is too large for this forum.
