creating a thin curved surface Version 3.4

I am trying to build a model of a cornea to study its behavior under loads. At first all I need to do is to create a thin shell representing the cornea. I have version 3.4 from my advisor, that I access remotely. As of now to create the shell I first draw two concentric spheres that I subtract from each other to obtain a spherical shell of required thickness. The I create a block that is big enough that when I subtact it from my spherical shell I obtain the final thin shell representing the cornea.
I havte two questions:
-Is there a simpler, more efficient way to do this?
- If I want to apply a load on top of the shell, and I want this load to affect a specific area (not an edge or point), how do I do this?
