Structural Mechanics Modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®
Intensive introduction to structural analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics®
This course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the Structural Mechanics Module, an add-on to the COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation platform that provides capabilities for modeling a wide range of structural phenomena. During the 4-day online course, we will introduce you to various physics interfaces and general functionality provided in this module. By the end of the course, you will have been introduced to modeling of solid mechanics, shells, beams, and membranes, as well as static and dynamic analyses, nonlinear material models, and structural contact modeling. We will also demonstrate multiphysics couplings involving heat transfer, fluid flow, electromagnetics, and acoustics. In addition, we will discuss best practices and useful convergence techniques for specific modeling scenarios.
Training Course Objective
The goal of this course is to immerse you in the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow and help you feel comfortable working with the Structural Mechanics Module. We will use a combination of instructor-led and self-guided hands-on training together with theoretical and practical lectures. By the end of the training course, you will know how to efficiently run mechanical analyses with the COMSOL® software.
Schedule
Day 1
11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT
The first day will begin with a basic theoretical session followed by an overview of the Structural Mechanics Module. We will cover basic modeling techniques such as meshing, solvers, and results visualization in COMSOL Multiphysics® to familiarize attendees with the user interface of the software. The following topics will be covered:
- Introduction to structural analysis
- Boundary conditions and simplified modeling techniques, such as adding lumped parameters (added mass, spring foundation, etc.)
- Use of symmetry and plane-stress and plane-strain problems
- Types of elements in COMSOL Multiphysics®, such as solids, shells, plates, membranes, beams, trusses, and wires
- Mixing element types (beam connection, shell connection, etc.)
2–5 p.m. EDT
- Study types:
- Stationary
- Time dependent
- Frequency-domain analysis (eigenfrequency, frequency, modal, and prestressed)
- Shock response and random vibrations*
*to be considered based on time and participant interest
Day 2
11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT
The second day will build upon the training from the first day. We will look at nonlinearity in structural analysis, with a focus on geometric nonlinearity and nonlinear material models. The following topics will be covered during the first session of the day:
- Sources of nonlinearity
- Problems involving geometric nonlinearity: finite strains and rotations and instability
- Load ramping techniques
2–5 p.m. EDT
The second session of the day will cover:
- Nonlinear material models (nonlinear elasticity, hyperelasticity, plasticity, creep, etc.)
- Solver settings and improving the convergence of nonlinear problems
Day 3
11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT
The third day will focus on contact modeling and some of the advanced modeling techniques of structural analysis. The first session of the day will cover contact analysis (such as different solver options, initial contact conditions, scaling of variables, fallback conditions, etc.).
2–5 p.m. EDT
The second session of the day will cover:
- Advanced modeling techniques (such as load case, homogenization, bolt analysis, stress linearization, crack modeling, weld evaluation, and submodeling)
- Multibody dynamics and rotordynamics*
- Exercises and Q&A
* to be considered based on time and participant interest
Day 4
11 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT
The last day will focus on multiphysics couplings and results visualization. The following topics will be covered:
- Thermal–structure interaction (TSI)
- Fluid–structure interaction (FSI)
- Electromagnetics–structure interaction (ESI)
- Acoustic–structure interaction (ASI)
2–5 p.m. EDT
- Visualization and presentation of results
- Open discussion and Q&A
Some or all the above topics will be considered according to the length of the course and the interests of the participants.
