Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) combines the potential of scanning probe technology with the power of optical microscopy and provides us with eyes for the nanoworld. NSOM probes require a subwavelength optical aperture with wide cone angle of the probe to efficiently channel the illumination light to the tip apex and acquire optical images beyond the diffraction limit. Chemically etching optical fiber with HF forms cone shaped NSOM probe and the cone angle of probe is dependent on etching time. Using COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software, we investigated the chemical etching process of optical fiber and determined the main factors and mechanism of etching process. We used the Transport of Diluted Species interface as well as the Deformed Geometry interface in our COMSOL

model. In this project, cone angles of simulated NSOM probes with variable etching time was compared with experimental data.
