Surface-to-surface radiation

Hello,
have an issue with equation comprehension in "surface-to-surface radiation"
There is an equation looks like Stephan-Bolzman
eb(T)=n^2*σ*T^4
Could you please what does the "n" mean?

“n” is refractive index of the transparent media, and “n^2” is dielectric constant, or relative permittivity.
