Importing solid meshes

Hi,

I have a 3D solid mesh that is composed of separable pieces, imagine something like disjoint fingers.
I've tried importing this file as STEP and IGES, but the problem is that it only loads one piece.

those files are fairly large (1.2gb as IGES and 213mb as STEP), could the cause of this problem be a limit on the node number?

please advise,
