Problem comparing massless and Newtonian particles

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

I meet a problem when solving particle tracking in a 2 D fluid flow, using Particle Tracing module. I compare both massless and Newtonian particle tracking models. To test the models, I set a simple 2D geometry (see atached image). Particles are injected from left to right. Regarding Newtonian particles, their diameter is100µm, and their density is the same as the fluid. I set a Drag force on the particles. As the Maximum element size in the mesh is fixed to 10µm, the particle integrate several pixels, and, in this way, their displacement should be different from simple streamlines. But then when I compare the results with massless particles trajectories, it appears that the trajectories from both models are (almost) exactly the same... Yet, closed to the wall, where the velocity is almost zero, the difference between Newtonian and massless particles should be well more significant...

Can you tell me what I missed? Is there any parameters that I have to set to take account the particle diameter on their displacement?

Thanking you in advance,
Regis
