Automatic Boolean operation in Extrude 2D to 3D

Dear all,

I have a question regarding extrude function when creating 3D geometry from 2D polygons. I created two polygons, one small and big, on a workplane. The smaller polygon is entirely inside the bigger polygon. Then I extrude all two objects(polygons) on the workplane. However, the extruded 3D geometry is not what I expected. There are two solids, instead only one with a hole, which is subtracted from big polygon using smaller one. My question is that: does the extrude function automatically determine whether smaller polygon is inside bigger polygon?Do we have to explicitly specify the boolean operation of the two polygons? I assume the extrude function automatically do the boolean operation(difference ) of the smaller and bigger polygon, as what it does in many other professional CAD software.

Thanks,
