Periodic flow boundaries

Hello

I am a bit new to COMSOL, but I have a free porous media flow model. When I use the inlet/outlet to assign boundaries my model converges, but when I attempt to use a periodic flow boundary to match another study the results are totally different (for similar pressures/velocities) and the model does not converge. Can anyone help explain how the periodic flow boundary works (the documentation is not helpful) and why it would destabilize the model under similar conditions?
