assign properties to individual meshes?

Hi

Can I assign properties to meshes in some selected region.

For example, I am working with RF module with a 50nm * 50nm * 100nm structure. Now, I want to assign some refractive index to the region:

10nm < x < 15nm
12nm < y < 15nm
50nm < z < 55nm

I know I could just draw a box and put the desired refractive index in that subdomain... but in general, if I do not have a separate subdomain, or if I need to randomly assign properties, how can I do that?
