splitting 3D problem into 2D

Hi all, I am modelling heat transfer in the ground in 2D planes. the problem is actually 3D with temperature varying with depth (Z) and in XY plane but as it a city-scale model, I am thinking of modelling many 2D XY planes (to capture everything in this plane) and use temperature distribution of one plane (say T as the surface plane) to calculate the heat flux from this first plane (at ground surface) to the second plane (1 m below, T2) due to temperature difference and conductivity of the ground. So the geometry for all planes is the same. I am setting up a model with several HT physics and one study with several sub-studies. I expected to be able to define a heat source for the second plane from the first plane at the surface as lambdadz(T-T2) but this is not working and ht.T is not identified by the second physics. your help is much appreciated.

many thanks, Asal
