Material property across the interface

Hello,
I assign two materials with different conductivity values (sigma1 and sigma2) into two adjacent objects. In the geometry list - Form Assembly(fin), we can chose form an assembly or form a union. Is there any difference in these two methods regarding the sigma value when pass across the interface between object1 and object2? To be more specific, will the sigma1 sharply drop to sigma2 when forming an assembly, while sigma1 decreases to sigma2 in a continuous way when forming a union?
Thanks for your reply very much!
Kind regards,
Shujun
